ballet top + dress DEPLY Sew Along Day 2/ Halfmoon Atelier
DAY 2 Bodice/Dress Body
Hello and welcome back to day two of the ballet top + dress Deply Sew Along! So far we have made big progress with sewing important steps to the construction of our garments.
Today we will be sewing the front and back bodice/dress pieces together at the sides, under the arms, using French Seams. We are making the dress, French Seams will only be made on the without the slit -! If you are making the top French Seams will be used on both sides.
Step 7. With wrong sides together, and matching up the notches, pin the front and back bodice together, at the sides only, from the under arm down. Sew at 1cm (⅜”) from the edge, then trim the seam allowance to 3mm (⅛”). Press the seam flat, then press it again open.
Step 8. Turn the bodice/dress inside out, so that right sides are together, and give it one more good press at the seams, so that the seams are at the very edge. With right sides still together, sew 0.5 cm (¼”) from the edge. Press the seam toward the back. You’ve just done French seams!
If you are sewing the top version, go ahead and follow steps 7 and 8 again for the other side. If sewing the DRESS please move onto steps 9 and 10.
Step 9. DRESS ONLY - With right sides still together, match notches and pin the front dress to the back dress on the side with the rounded corner and slit, from under the arm to the notch just above the curve. Sew at 1.5 cm (⅝”) seam allowance. Trim the seam allowance to 1 cm (⅜”). Press seam open.
Step 10. From the top of the seam you’ve just sewn to the bust notch only (approx. 6cm or 2 ⅜”), fold the raw edge of the seam allowances in toward the seam, wrong sides touching, by 0.5 cm (¼”) hiding the raw edges, and press. Edge stitch this portion on both sides of the seam. (you will finish the rest at the end)
That is it for today! Tomorrow we will work on constructing facings and attaching the facing to the bodice/dress.
